English Concepts-9 & 10
Instructor: Mrs. Dauplaise
English I: Course Description: This course is designed to help students develop important skills in the areas of reading comprehension and written and oral communication through direct instruction, additional support, and review.á Students will gradually build upon skills that will further prepare them to be successful in the next grade and on MCAS. Class work will align with the state curriculum frameworks for English/Language Arts and includes preparation for the MCAS test. Students will study literature by genre: short stories, novels, poetry, drama, epic, and nonfiction. Terminology for the analysis of literature will be emphasized. Composition will focus on the organization and development of paragraphs and the formal essay. Most composition topics will be a response to and analysis of the literature. Students will have experiences with the writing process, and open-ended MCAS practice questions will be periodically administered. The English Concepts curriculum is a two year curriculum that is studied at a slower pace with more direct teacher instruction and more time to practice.á Students are expected to be active participants and try their best at all times.
á
Objectives: The student will:
  • Read, evaluate, and discuss a variety of literature, identifying the important elements of each piece.
  • Develop written fluency by responding frequently to literature in formal and informal essays.
  • Increase his/her working vocabulary.
  • Become a better listener and speaker.
